Fuji Fishing

Fuji Fishing

The prefecture of Yamanashi is known for its very clear water. Surrounded by mountains, it has clear streams and lakes that are great for fishing all year round. Bass fishing in the area is well regarded as the size of the fish are quite decent. Lake Yamanakako and Lake Kawaguchiko are well populated with the fish and occasionally these lakes are restocked with bass fry. Local shops around both lakes have fishing rental gear and advice.

Fly fishing in the many mountain streams of Yamanashi is also very popular, particularly in the Sagami and Fuji river systems. Here it is possible to catch rainbow trout, Char, and Japanese trout among other species.

Oshino village has clear streams fed by Fuji springs running through it. The constant water temperature makes for an ideal trout habitat which is why this are is so popular for trout fishing. The Katsuragawa River which runs through the village is also a very popular place to fly fish.

There is nothing more relaxing than a quit day fly fishing in the great outdoors. Even with family you can enjoy eating your catch after cooking it on one of the many BBQs provided at some locations along the river bank.

Don’t neglect to follow the rules however. You will need to purchase a fishing permit at the bait shop (or shop where yellow flag is displayed) and limit your catch so that others may also enjoy the experience.

Fishing at lake Motosuko is also popular. (The picture of this lake is shown on the 1000 yen bill). This is the deepest of the five lakes and also the clearest. Here you can catch Spoted Sea Trout, Rainbow Trout, Black Bass, Red Salmon, Eel, Dace and Fresh Water Smelt. Unfortunately, there are also Carp in the lake but these are not exactly edible. If you fish in this lake you would also be recommended to use lures if you want to try your luck along the banks with the bigger fish. (The use of plastic worms is prohibited in the five lakes area however because they pollute the lake if they come off) One day fishing permits are obtainable down by the boat ramp.
